What goes wrong in visible mending, and what it teaches

The recurring failure patterns in visible repair, how to work out which one you hit, and the one category of garment where a repair can be a safety problem.

Failed repairs are more informative than successful ones, because a repair that holds tells you only that nothing you did was fatal. A repair that fails tells you which specific decision was wrong, provided you look at it before you unpick it.

What to take away

  • Almost every failure is one of four things: anchoring, tension, material mismatch, or ignoring the cause of the damage.
  • Diagnose before you unpick. Once the stitching is out, the evidence goes with it.
  • Children's sleepwear and other flame-resistant garments are a special case where a repair can defeat a safety standard.
  • A repair that fails after five washes and one that fails after two years are different problems.

The four failure patterns

  • Anchoring. Stitching stopped inside the weakened area, so the thin ring around the hole carried the load and tore.
  • Tension. Stitches pulled tighter than the surrounding fabric, so the repair gathers and the fabric buckles at its edge.
  • Material mismatch. Patch or thread differing in fiber, weight or shrinkage, so the two parts move apart over time.
  • Cause ignored. The hole was made by an insect, a chemical, or a rubbing hardware edge, and the cause is still there.

Work through them in that order. Anchoring and tension explain most first-year failures; mismatch shows up at the third or fourth wash; ignored causes announce themselves as a second hole nearby.

Look before you unpick

Turn the garment inside out and photograph both faces before touching the stitching. Note where the fabric parted relative to the stitch line: inside it, along it, or outside it. Inside means the patch was too small. Along means the thread was stronger than the cloth. Outside means the patch was too stiff.

Where a garment has been treated or repaired before, ordinary light may not show it. The National Park Service leaflet on ultraviolet induced visible fluorescence describes an examination technique using a commonly available ultraviolet lamp: ultraviolet is invisible to the eye, but directed at an object's surface it is often transformed into visible colors, and observing that fluorescence can help answer questions about the identification of materials and the condition of an artifact. The same leaflet notes that ultraviolet exposure has a cumulative effect and can damage and fade textiles, so this is an inspection, not a working light.

The safety exception

Most repair decisions are aesthetic or structural. One is neither. Garments made to a flammability standard, children's sleepwear in particular, get their fire performance from the fabric and its finish, and a patch of ordinary cotton can defeat it.

The rules recognize the priority explicitly. The care labeling rule's clause on conflict with flammability standards states that where this regulation conflicts with regulations issued under the Flammable Fabrics Act, the flammability regulations govern. That is a small sentence with a clear meaning: fire performance outranks care labeling, and it should outrank your repair preferences too. Do not patch flame-resistant sleepwear with untreated fabric.

Failure timing tells you something

A repair that fails within a few washes points to tension or shrinkage. One that survives a year and then goes points to material mismatch or to fabric that was already near the end. One that fails in a new place points to a cause you did not address.

Most of the specific errors have a matching prevention, which the mistakes people make at home list covers, and the diagnostic habits belong with the checks experienced menders run first.

Common questions

Should I always redo a failed repair? No. Sometimes the failure shows the garment is finished. If the fabric parts under thumb pressure two inches away, the answer is patch stock.

Is a UV lamp worth owning for this? For a household, no. It is useful when you are dealing with an old garment of unknown history, and a museum or conservator has one.

How do I repair flame-resistant clothing? Ideally you do not patch it with ordinary fabric. Replace the garment, or accept that the repaired area no longer meets the standard and stop using it as sleepwear.

Can I tell tension failure from anchoring failure after the fact? Usually. Tension failure leaves a puckered, gathered repair that still holds; anchoring failure leaves a repair that is flat and has torn away at its inner edge.
