Corrosion is the main enemy

Needles, pins, scissors and machine parts are steel, and steel corrodes with moisture. The threshold used in conservation is worth borrowing. The National Park Service leaflet on creating a microclimate box for metal storage states that metal objects corrode and deteriorate when exposed to moisture and pollutants.

Iron and copper alloys are especially vulnerable and can develop active corrosion rapidly. The way to slow it is to house metal below 35 percent relative humidity, in an enclosure sealed airtight and controlled with a desiccant such as silica gel or montmorillonite clay.

You do not need 35 percent for sewing pins. You do need to stop storing them in a bathroom cupboard or an unheated porch, and a sealed tin with a desiccant sachet is the household version of that box.

Reading the work backwards to the tool is the useful skill. Skipped stitches almost always mean the needle, not the operator.

The tool nobody counts as a tool

Your own body is part of the kit and it degrades under the same repetitive loads as anything else. OSHA's sewing eTool section on stitching describes what the operation demands: taking cut material, placing it on the sewing mount and running it through the machine.

It requires pinch grips and awkward arm, neck and trunk postures, with force needed to push fabric through, and repeated reaching overhead, to the side, behind or down into tubs. Its solutions include placing the station on a platform, using height-adjustable racks or tables, and minimizing reaches.

Hand mending has the same shape at lower intensity. If your hands ache after an hour, the setup is wrong rather than your hands being weak.

A maintenance rhythm

Wipe steel after use, store it dry and sealed, replace needles when stitches start skipping rather than when they visibly bend, and have shears sharpened before they start dragging. Every one of those is cheaper than the fabric it protects.

Common questions

How often should hand needles be replaced?
When they resist entry, snag, or leave a visible mark on the fabric. Some people work through a dozen a year; others use the same one for months.
Can rusted pins be cleaned and reused?
Not reliably. Even cleaned, a pitted pin drags on fabric and can leave marks. They are cheap enough to discard.
Does thread really go bad?
Cotton does, over years, especially in warm damp storage. Test by pulling a length; if it snaps easily, do not put it inside a repair.
Is a dull blade actually dangerous?
More than a sharp one, because it needs more force and is likelier to slip. That is on top of the damage it does to the fabric edge.
